About Our Captain
Captain John is a 5th generation native (Conch) born and raised in Key West, and a 2nd generation firefighter. After a lifetime of fishing as a hobby, John became a professional captain in 2008 and has been running charters ever since. Captain John says the best part of being a skipper is spending time with people, and is dedicated to sharing his passion of fishing with anyone who sets foot aboard his boat.
About our boat
The Heavy Hitter is a Coast Guard inspected, fully equipped, custom 2015 34' LOA Contender center console. Outfitted with twin Yamaha 300 outboard engines with a 500 mile range and a top speed of 44 knots, and with an onboard Simrad radar, fishfinder, GPS, and VHF radio, this boat is ideal for fishing in Key West. 110 gallons worth of live well space ensures your catch stays fresh no matter the size, and our vessel comfortably carries up to 6 passengers and crew.

No, guests fishing aboard a licensed charter do not need a separate fishing license; it’s covered by the charter’s license.
What should I bring on my fishing trip?
We recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, non-slip shoes, and light layers for changing weather conditions. You may also want to bring snacks and a camera to capture your catches and the scenic views.
How many people can your boat accommodate?
The Heavy Hitter is capable of carrying six persons total, including crew.
Is it okay if this is my first time fishing?
Yes, our crew is happy to help guide you every step of the way in a safe, fun, and professional environment.
What kind of fishing does your crew specialize in?
Although we are outfitted for both deepwater and inshore charters, we specialize in reef and wreck fishing, and going after bottom-dwelling species such as grouper, shark, barracuda, and permit, to name a few.
What kind of payments do you accept?
We only take cash or credit cards. A 20% deposit is taken at the time of booking.
Is there parking at your marina?
Marina parking is available free of charge.
Can I bring my service dog with me?
Dogs are welcome on our charters, as long as they are well-behaved. A leash or harness of some kind is recommended in case the dog needs to be restrained for safety.
Is your boat handicap accessible?
No, but please speak to our crew if you are handicapped and we can see about modifying our boat to suit your needs during our charters.
Are there restrooms aboard the boat?
There are no restrooms aboard the boat. Plan accordingly.
What happens if I get seasick?
Our crew can guide the boat to calmer waters or take you back to shore, but Captain John stresses that refunds due to seasickness are not possible.
Should I bring my own fishing gear?
Although we provide all fishing gear and tackle, if you want to bring your lucky rod and reel, or a set of lures that you prefer, you are more than welcome to.
Am I guaranteed to catch something?
Although we might not land the fish you were looking for (there are no guarantees with Mother Nature), generally speaking, our clients are always able to pull something big out of the abundant waters of the Florida Keys, no matter what time of year.
Do I need to know how to swim?
No (but please let us know if this is the case before we embark). We provide life jackets and safety equipment for all our guests, and no one has ever fallen overboard during our years of operation.
Are you located on an island?
Yes, we are located on Stock Island on the western edge of the Florida Keys.
What is the best time to fish in Key West?
It depends on what you’re after! Many sport fish are seasonal (sailfish in winter, tarpon in spring, etc.), but Captain John recommends May/June and December/January for the most exciting action (please keep in mind that December/January weather in the Keys can be unpredictable).
Can you sell any fish that I don’t want to keep?
Selling fish unlicensed for any purpose is illegal; neither charters or their clients are allowed to do so.
What times do we leave?
We can tailor your charter to leave anytime you like, between the hours of 6am to 4pm. And of course, our Sunset Cruises embark shortly before sunset.
Are sandals allowed onboard?
Yes. Our deck is painted with non-skid material so sandals are fine. We ask that our clients don’t wear black-soled shoes, or if they are black-soled, that they be non-marking, to avoid damaging the boat.
What kind of tackle do you use?
We are constantly trying new products in our search for the top fishing gear out there. We currently use Vance’s for spinning tackle, and a mix of Shimano, Penn, and Accurate for our bottom tackle.
Is alcohol allowed on the boat?
Alcohol is allowed for guests of legal drinking age; we do not allow glass bottles onboard.
Do you provide water on your trip?
Absolutely. Hydration is very important while fishing in the tropics.
Are snacks provided?
Yes, although they’re usually a small assortment of snacks. You are welcome to bring any food you might want to eat on your journey.
How far out to sea do we travel on a trip?
It varies by season; in winter, when the large fish are farther offshore, a typical trip might be twenty miles. In summer, however, the fish are closer to shore and we’d only travel five miles out. On specialty trips, such as to the Dry Tortugas, we can go as far as seventy miles out (fuel surcharges apply.)
Are gas prices included on your specialty trips?
Yes, our fuel surcharges are included in the upfront total for your specialty charters; we don’t believe in surprising guests with hidden fees during or after their trip.
How fast does your boat go?
We typically cruise out to the fishing grounds at about 35 to 38 miles per hour.
Are children allowed on your fishing trips?
Yes. All ages are welcome.
How many seats are on your boat?
There are two forward seats for guests, and we provide bean bags for any additional persons.
Is there a cooler on board?
Yes. Feel free to store your snacks and drinks there.
What should I NOT bring?
Do not bring any illegal drugs, glass containers, or spray sunscreen. We also ask that you not wear black-soled shoes, or if they are black-soled, that they be non-marking, to avoid damaging the boat.
Can we go for a swim during our charter?
If the conditions are good, you are welcome to ask our crew to stop somewhere for a swim.
Do you have life jackets on board?
Life jackets are provided for everyone on board.
How far in advance can I make a reservation?
You can make a reservation as far out in advance as you like!
Can we stay out longer than our allotted time?
Yes, although it is up to the discretion of the crew, and additional charges may be incurred.
Do you offer clothing-optional charters?
We’re not opposed to it! Ask us directly at the time of your booking.
Are my credit card details secure?
Yes. We don’t share your credit card information with anyone else.
Do you offer overnight charters?
No, sorry, our boat is not equipped to accommodate guests overnight.
